This field guid has been especially designed to help in the identification of what would otherwise be a bewildering array of groups of similar species, and is the first field guide to use full-colour photographs to highlight the characteristic features of each land mammal. It is also the first to include whales and dolphins. The book is divided into 112 colour plates; where possible, each plate groups related or similar species to enable the reader to make direct comparisons. Up-to-date distribution maps accompany the majority of species. An innovative element is the highlighting of "identification pointers" as an aid to quick identification in the field. Spoor drawings of the larger species are included in a separate section to allow for immediate comparison. Indexes to common names and scientific names are supplied.
