Tra tante strenne pretenziose, fasulle e care come il fuoco, questo bilancio della carriera di Chris Bonington tradotto per Natale da Mursia è un'eccezione, anzi il libro più bello della stagione. Benché Bonington sia da noi a malapena conosciuto di nome, è l'alpinista attivo più illustre per gli inglesi e l'unico al mondo in grado di illustrare in prima persona l'evoluzione dell'alpinismo dagli anni cinquanta ad oggi, senza sfigurare al confronto con Reinhold Messner.
Per raccontare "Trent'anni di alpinismo sulle grandi montagne del mondo", che è il sottotitolo del libro, Bonington impiega poche parole e molte immagini, abile mestiere giornalistico e un'efficace tecnica di montaggio. Ma più che derivato dal cinema, il libro è un eccellente prodotto editoriale ispirato dalla videoconferenza, un genere tradizionale per i grandi alpinisti, basato su diapositive emozionanti commentate dalla viva voce del protagonista.
In "Mountaineer", che equivale ad alpinista, si ritrovano tutti gli ingredienti dell'alpinismo classico, le più belle montagne, le sfide, l'eroismo e come compagni i più bei nomi dell'alpinismo inglese. Non manca il rovescio della medaglia, il rischio, il maltempo, gli incidenti con morti illustri come i fortissimi Peter Boardmann e Joe Tasker scomparsi sull'inviolata cresta nord dell'Everest nel 1982.
