In breve: While ... an adventure of considerable entertainment value, it fails in its ability to inform, enlighten and instruct.... One cannot fault Kertscher on his writing: It is crisp, clear, dramatic and intensely personal. The organization of the book makes good sense. He takes us across three distinct geographical regions, but we learn little in the process.
