En 1938, Harold William Tilman dirige la cinquième expédition britannique El'Everest et atteint, sans oxygène, l'altitude de 8 300 mètres. Ce document, vivant et spirituel, apporte El'histoire de la conquête de l'Everest une contribution originale. En effet, Tilman fut un précurseur authentique " Une expédition qui ne peut s'organiser sur une feuille de papier Elettre ordinaire [...] souffre d'un excès d'organisation " - ainsi conçoit-il les expéditions qu'il envisage légères bien avant l'heure.

In breve: The names of Bogle and Manning are remembered as those of the first Englishmen to enter Tibet. George Bogle (1746-1781) joined the East Indian Company in 1769. There he very quickly won the approval of Warren Hastings, the governor of Bengal, who in 1774 appointed Bogle to act as envoy to the Lama of Tibet.

In breve: Reinhold Messner racconta la salita senza ossigeno dell'Everest, effettuata insieme a Peter Habeler, nel 1978. Era la prima volta che accadeva su un ottomila. Un'impresa, ritenuta impossibile, che ha cambiato l'alpinismo himalayano e ne ha spostato in avanti i limiti.

In breve: La storia dell'Everest, nel racconto dei suoi protagonisti di ogni epoca, corredata con belle foto come si conviene ad un libro di grande formato. La prefazione al libro è di Edmund Hillary il primo uomo, insieme a Norgay Tenzing, a calcare la cima della più alta montagna del mondo.

In breve: In May 1996 a number of expeditions attempted to climb Mount Everest on the Southeast Ridge route. Crowded conditions slowed their progress and late in the day 23 men and women, including the expedition leaders, were caught in a ferocious blizzard. Disorientated and out of oxygen, climbers struggled to find their way to safety. Alone and climbing blind, Anatoli Boukreev rescued a number of climbers from certain death.
